Trekking in Africa: Preparation
March 3rd to the 27th, heading to Africa for a 3 week trip to visit Peace Corps volunteer Christine Callahan. Week one: living in Outjo, Namibia. Week two: trekking the Drakensberg Traverse. Week three: living in Swakopmund. The following post includes our itinerary flowchart tool and general packing list.
I have been preparing to go on a month long excursion to Namibia (Africa) for about 10 months to visit Peace Corps volunteer Christine Callahan – who is spending two and a half years there working on hospital grounds in Outjo, Namibia.
You will be gone a whole month?
Almost – March 3 to March 27. Since the planning began months ago, I was able to tell anyone it would affect almost a half year ahead of time (i.e. employers and family). Figured if I am heading to Africa, might as well make it a longer trip.
What are you trekking?
What more glorious of a continent to participate in my first ever trek than Africa? We found this trek guide company and booked a 9 day long trek in the Northern Drakensberg Traverse with them about 5 months ahead of time. The rest of the trip’s dates revolved around when they had an opening for us to take the trek. We have to fly from Namibia to Johannesburg, then take a 2 hour shuttle to the start of the trek.
